Dress Code

Berman Hebrew Academy’s dress code, applicable to students in grades 1-12, is designed to balance students’ need for autonomy and self-expression with the desire to create a serious atmosphere that is conducive to learning. The dress code requires all students and faculty to dress in a way that respects our school community and an environment in which Jewish and secular education are at the center.

Unless otherwise indicated by an administrator, the below dress code applies on campus both during and after school hours, at all school events, and anytime a student is representing Berman outside of school. 

Visitors to our campus are also asked to respect this dress code.

Please refer to your division handbook for any iterations of the below dress code.

All Students

All clothing with images, words, or logos must be of an appropriate nature.

Shoes

• Shoes or sneakers must be worn with socks or tights (for females).
• Crocs and Sandals (except during science labs) are permitted. 
• Slippers, slides, etc. are not in the spirit of the dress code and may not be worn.

Hats

• Hats and hoods are not in the spirit of the dress code and may not be worn.

Body Art

• Body art is not permitted.

Females

Shirts

• Collared blouses, crew-neck shirts, t-shirts, and sweaters are all acceptable, provided they are long enough to cover the top of the skirt at all times. Midriffs, front or back, may not be exposed at any time.
• Short sleeves are permitted; capped sleeves or sleeveless shirts are not in the spirit of the dress code and may not be worn.
• Low-cut necklines, off the shoulders, cropped shirts, cut outs, and tank tops are not in the spirit of the dress code and may not be worn.
• Sweatshirts may only be worn over dress-code appropriate shirts.

Skirts and Dresses

• Skirts and dresses must fall to the middle of the knee when standing.
• Leggings and tights may only be worn under dress code appropriate skirts and dresses
• Pants (ex- sweatpants, pajama pants, yoga pants, etc.) are not in the spirit of the dress code and should not be worn under skirts.
• Form-fitting skirts, skirts with excessive slits, or those that go above the knee are not in the spirit of the dress code and may not be worn.

Piercings

• Female students may only have pierced ears. 
• Nose rings, gauges or eyebrow piercings or any other piercings are not permitted.

Hair

Hair may only be dyed natural colors.

Males

• A Kippah must be worn at all times.
• Tzitzit must be worn at all times.

Shirts

• Shirts must be collared with sleeves.
• Sports jerseys are not permitted.
• Sweatshirts or sweaters may only be worn over dress-code appropriate shirts.
• All images, lettering, and messaging must be appropriate and in the spirit of the dress code.

Pants

• Pants must be full-length khakis, slacks, or chinos
• Jeans / pants that look like jeans (of any color), sweatpants (or pants made of sweatpants material), pajama pants, athletic pants, and any pants with an elastic or drawstring waistband or cuff are not in the spirit of the dress code and may not be worn.
• Shorts are not in the spirit of the dress code and may not be worn.*

Piercings

• Male students are not permitted to have piercings of any kind. 
• If a male student has an earring, it must be removed.

Hair

• Traditional hairstyles which conform to halacha (with payot) are appropriate for  school. Hair must be of a length that is both neat and presentable, reflecting the basic  appearance of a ben torah; no excessively long or short hair (subject to administrative  discretion) is permitted. Dyed hair is not permitted.
• Dyed hair is not permitted.

*Boys in Lower School (grades K-5) are permitted to wear dress-code appropriate shorts from the start of school until we return from Sukkot Break and when we return from Pesach break.
